Historical Buildings and Architecture in Spain – Mezquita of Cordoba

World visit

The Mezquita is a major tourist attraction in Spain, located in Cordoba, Andalusia.

It’s a rare church where two completely different religions, Islam and Christianity, coexist. Why are two religions mixed together in one church?

The history of the Mezquita begins in 785 AD, when it was built by order of an Islamic dynasty. The site is believed to have been the location of the Church of St. Vincent, a Christian church built during the Visigothic Kingdom.

The Muslims, showing respect for Christianity, did not destroy the church but converted it into a mosque. Subsequent leaders expanded it, making it one of the world’s largest mosques. However, repeated invasions by Christian nations led to the withdrawal of the Islamic dynasty.
