The Toyama Glass Art Museum
The Toyama Glass Art Museum opened in 2015 and is located in the center of Toyama City. Built by Kengo Kuma, a world-class architect, the museum is located in Toyama Kirari, a multipurpose building that includes a library. Toyama Kirari is built with a combination of granite, glass, and aluminum: a combination of different materials making the facade reminiscent of the Tateyama Mountain Range.
Inside, the building features louver flaps made of Toyama-sourced wood to create a warm yet spacious interior. In addition to the Collection, the permanent exhibition found on the 4th floor, and the other special exhibitions, the 6th floor features the “Glass Art Garden,” an installation made by glass art maestro Dave Chihuly.
The stunning building mirrors the beautiful displays and sculptures inside; together they create a tribute to the city’s history with a glasswork and an exciting look into the future of art.
Toyama city has a reptation for glass research activity and glasswork. It’s a center of medicine, so the glassware interest grew alongside the pharmaceutical research. As well as the exhibitions, you’ll also find the city’s library, a charming cafe and a glass art shop.
Ikedaya Yasubei Shoten
Ikedaya Yasubei Shōten is an old medicine shop in downtown Toyama City that practices in traditional medicine. Established in 1936, the shop sells the types of medicines for which Toyama became famous as a pharmaceutical center during the Edo Period. In a surrounding reminiscent of the past, visitors can receive counseling from the shop clerks and purchase medicines designed to treat an array of ailments.
In the center of the shop stands an old-fashioned machine with which clerks demonstrate the traditional method of making pills before allowing visitors a chance to try their hand at it. The shop has a restaurant on the second floor that serves health food cooked with the same medicinal herbs present in some of the medicines.
