A small, historic Buddhist temple known for its rows of Buddha statues and the
ancient ginkgo tree in its grounds.
While many of the Kokubunji temples are now ruins, this is a famous temple with a
relatively well-organized structure, albeit small. The main hall and large ginkgo tree
convey the atmosphere of the Muromachi period, and the three-story pagoda built
200 years ago has a dignified feel, contributing to the historic townscape of
Takayama.
During the Nara period, Kokubunji temples were established all over the country by
Emperor Shomu and Empress Komyo. Many of them are unknown, and they have
been in the same place for a long time, so it is quite rare for Kokubunji temples
whose buildings still remain. The buildings have been rebuilt many times due to fires
and wars, and the three-story pagoda dates back to the early 1800s, while the gate
dates back to the late 1500s. Although they are newer, woodworking in the Hida
region is famous, so it is well worth seeing. The Great Ginkgo is a giant tree that is
1200 years old. The combination of the ginkgo tree and the three-story pagoda is
beautiful. There are also Buddha statues from the Heian period.
