Ishikawa Prefectural Museum
The Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of History is a three-building complex constructed as a weapons storehouse in the beginning of the 20th century.
The architecture, cutting edge at the time, incorporated western elements that differed from traditional Japanese wooden structures. In today’s world the buildings exude a retro appeal.
Shiinoki Cultural Complex
The Shiinoki Cultural Complex, Ishikawa Prefecture, was a part of the previous prefectural government building constructed in 1924. The front side of the Shiinoki Cultural Complex maintains the original bricks, and the opposite side provides a modern space with glass windows. The facilities harmonized with two acorn trees (estimated to be 300 years old) incorporate an interactive space including a tourist information desk, restaurant and cafe,
conference room, and galleries.
21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art
The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa is a modern circular building that attracts visitors from all over the world.
In 2004, this building was awarded the Golden Lion for the most significant work at the Venice Biennale of Architecture. The design was the work of SANAA, the architectural firm of Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa, two architects who were jointly awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2010, a prestigious award known as the “Nobel Prize of architecture.”
This unique design, which is circular when seen from above, makes no distinction between the front and rear, and visitors are free to wander in and out of the four entrances at will, making it an “art museum that opens itself up to the town”.
Yoshiro and Yoshio Taniguchi Museum of Architecture
Yoshiro Taniguchi (1904-1979) was born in Kanazawa, and is a prominent Japanese architect who built over 70 buildings and 40 memorials. He is the father of Yoshio Taniguchi (1937-), who redesigned the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York in 2004. The Yoshiro and Yoshio Taniguchi Museum of Architecture, Kanazawa was built to commemorate Yoshiro and
Yoshio Taniguchi. The building is a sophisticated piece of architecture that evokes the work of Yoshiro Taniguchi. Among its displays is a replica of Yoshiro Taniguchi’s famous work, “Yushintei”, the Japanese-style annex of the State Guest House Akasaka Palace. Visitors can see architectural works of both Taniguchi architects, as well as learn about Kanazawa’s multi-layered architectural culture.
