Nagasaki Jiro Bookstore in Kumamoto City area

Japan visit

Nagasaki Jiro Bookstore is a two-story wooden building with brick exterior walls.

Its distinctive features include a roof with small eaves, a small roof on the top of the barrier-like wall, decorations around the eaves, and a continuous irregular arch on the second floor. It is widely known as one of the oldest bookstores in the city.

Located near the center of the merchant district of the old castle town, this long-established bookstore has been in business for over 140 years. It is said that literary greats such as Mori Ogai have also visited the bookstore. The building, designed by Yasuoka Katsuya, who is famous for the Marunouchi red brick office district, is also designated as a national registered tangible cultural property. On the second floor, there is the Nagasaki Jiro Café, where you can enjoy authentic coffee while watching the streetcars passing by right in front of you.

After the Kumamoto earthquake, Murakami Haruki also visited the place.

Though Nagasaki Jiro Bookstore closed at the end of June 2012, the coffee shop on the second floor continues to operate as before.
