This is one of the largest gassho-style houses in Shirakawa-go, and the only one
designated as an Important Cultural Property by the government. It was built in the
mid-Edo period, so it has a history of over 300 years.
It is still used as a residence, so the rest of the house is open to the public.
There is a hearth just inside the entrance, which I think was the center of life at the
time. Around it, tableware and tools from that time are on display.
There are also several rooms on the first floor, which is quite spacious.
Then, after climbing the slightly steep staircase next to the hearth to the second floor,
a spacious space spreads out before you. It seems that sericulture was carried out
here.
It’s also nice to look at the surroundings from the window on the second floor.
I think it’s worth paying the admission fee to enter.
