It is a 15-minute walk from JR Takayama Station. Originally the residence of a
wealthy merchant who ran a sake brewery, this fine townhouse was rebuilt in 1907
and is designated as an Important Cultural Property. There are plenty of things to
see, such as pillars and beams with Shunkei lacquer and three-dimensional lattices.
When you pass through the entrance of this quaint mansion-like building, you will
find a large open-air atrium with a dirt floor, and when you look up at the high ceiling,
you will see a lattice-like intersection of thick beams and pillars. It is a very luxurious
space. This fine building is even more charming when you enter inside than it is from
the outside.
