The Hokkaido University was founded in 1876 as Sapporo Agricultural College, and in 1903, Sapporo Campus was relocated its current site to the north-west of Sapporo Station.
Today, the campus area stands at 1775 km sq. makeingit one of the largest in Japan.
Since opening as Sapporo Agricultural College in 1876, Hokkaido University has preserved over four milion important research records and samples.
To display these precious items to the public and to explain in detail the history of the university, the Hokkaido University Museum was established in 1999.
It is housed in the grand old Science Building. (The School of Science was established in 1930)
