Historical Buildings and Architecture – BILBAO in Basque, Spain ・Mercado de la Libera (the Ribera Market)

World visit

Located in a vibrant area right next to the Bilbao estuary, right beside the Nervión River in Bilbao’s Old Town, the Ribera Market is a popular spot for photography. It serves as both a commercial hub for the city and a popular tourist destination where visitors can purchase high-quality products and savor Basque cuisine.

While the nearly located San Sebastián has its own market called Mercado de la Bretxa, some people prefer the Mercado de la Ribera in Bilbao, finding it cleaner and more appealing.

Remarkably, the building was designed by Pedro Ispizua and opened in 1929 – the same year the Great Depression began – on the site of the former Plaza Vieja (Old Square).

It underwent a major renovation in 2011, resulting in a pristine, clean atmosphere throughout the building.

The market houses over 100 stalls spread across multiple floors; a visit offers the chance to soak up the lively atmosphere, shop for a wide variety of foods, and catch a glimpse of the daily lives of Bilbao’s residents.

The ground floor houses a fish market and a food court, while the second floor features butcher shops, and the third floor offers fruits and vegetables.

The food court area features slightly upscale cafes, bars, and restaurants, offering a wide variety of spots to enjoy pinchos. This area was reportedly added in 2015.
