Dating back to the 14th century, Bilbao Cathedral is located in the heart of the Old Town. Its interior features impressively high ceilings and fifteen side chapels. Be sure to visit the charming cloister—one of only two in the Biscay region.
Set within a small square, the structure features a magnificent entrance with large, pointed wooden doors, surrounded by exquisite stone figures and intricate carvings. Above this rise four small spires, accompanied by a circular window and a balcony. To the left stands a majestic clock tower featuring small windows and an impressively detailed spire. Massive, multicolored stone columns support beautiful arches on either side. On the floor to the left of the exit lies a large, intricately designed golden frame enclosing an image of Jesus Christ on the cross. A magnificent circular stained-glass window is positioned above the organ.
As the cathedral serves as a stop for pilgrims walking the Camino de Santiago in northern Spain, one may occasionally encounter pilgrims there.
The Medal(Médaille) of Saint James is engraved with the attributes of Saint James: the scallop shell and the staff.
