・Azkuna Zentroa – Alhóndiga Bilbao
Azukuna Zentroa is a multi-purpose complex located in Bilbao.
Originally designed by Basque architect Ricardo Bastida and opened in 1909 as a wine warehouse, it was later renovated by Philippe Starck – the designer famous for the iconic object atop the Super Dry Hall – and reoped as a multi-purpose complex in 2010.
The building was formerly known as “Alhondiga Bilbao”, but its name has reportely been changed to “Azkuna Zentroa” in honor of the former mayor of Bilbao, Iñaki Azkuna Urreta.
The front has a castle-like atmosphere. Behind it, a modern glass building is visible. There were no doors at the main entrance, and the area loading up to the entrance was paved with tiles, making it feel inviting and easy to enter.
stepping inside, one is greeted by high ceilings and structure composed of three brick buildings. The 43 columns supporting the structure are distinctive, each featuring a unique design They were reportedly decorated by the Italian Stage designer Lorenzo Baraldi.
